I agree that the political issues will be HUGE and undoubtedly hinder .arab. Iran would probably go more for .caucasian than americans (damn thats hard to spell ). Only point is if they get rtl first then it gives them something to play with/market ect otherwise it will be worse than .asia or .eu ect.

not sure on the technical issues with email ect. just looking at features/services that might impact the ext favorable/unfavorably.

Not worried about it. a couple of arabic.nets hopefully will be juniors college fund

Email? If you mean the username part of the email address, then this is independent of any extension being in punycode/unicode. Email programs are simply not built to encode/decode unicode usernames. Why they haven't adopted IDNA is beyond me, but I haven't really dug deeply into this topic - it could be something like the normalization ruleset can't possibly be as simple as it can be for domain names...
