Iceland's TLD has been around for donkey's years.
This is just ICANN celebrating that they've convinced a ccTLD to sign up for ICANN domination.
ICANN can't really kick ccTLD's around because there is no formal contract between the different ccTLD's and ICANN. Every once in a while, they convince another ccTLD to finally sign a contract - often via pressure from the USG through trade agreements.
The ccTLD's with brains refuse to sign, because ICANN shouldn't have any involvement in their sovereign property.
Countries should be allowed to do whatever the hell they want with their ccTLD as long as it agrees with IANA technical regulations.
ICANN was SUPPOSED to be a technical-based organisation (according to the original white paper) and even stated as such on their website until recently, but they're keen deep in political and social crap now and that's why they need millions of dollars for their exploding bureaucracy.
