ccTLD 中国 works

The ccTLD 中国 works. (中国 = China) Well it works if you change the DNS settings on your Computer to use alternate DNS Root Servers.

Lets take Beijing University as an example. http://北京大学.cn/ will work with your standard DNS settings but http://北京大学.中国/ will not work.

Now setup your Computer to use the Cesidian Root Servers. Instructions at http://cesidianroot.net/

Now both http://北京大学.cn/ and http://北京大学.中国/ will work :-)

I have not been around in a while here so my apologies if this has been posted recently. Do you know a good registrar where one can purchase .中国 idn domains for cheap usd $? This is around now yes?

It's just .cn, only .中国 maps to it through certain dns-servers.

Yes, ICANN has stated policy for ccTLDs in Cairo. Provisional implementation January 2009. The first IDN gTLDs will be at least three months later than that as the implementation draft will be approved three months later. In reality it is likely to take a little longer, but we know that Verisign are gearing up at they have adapted their Site Certification to work with IDN.

You can reg them right now of course but it will only be .idn (for the general public) on China mainland (for now).

Nice... again I've heard of this... but where is a registrar that will accept usd and is written in English... and for how much a year?
