This domain has "ok" stats, but when you type "bike" into google, it returns Pyörän. When you type pyörän into google it returns wheel:
g(bike) = Pyörän g(pyörän) = wheel scape(Pyörä) = wheel scape(Pyörän) = NA The capitalization of pyörän made me curious about the tm issue. Scape.net says the primary bike terms are polkupyörä and pyöräillä, with polkupyörä having the best stats. stats on Pyörän: g(finnish, Pyörän) = 440k, (google restricted to Finnish SERPS) adwords = 33/40 (competition/search vol) stats on Pyörä: g(fin,Pyörä)=455k adwords = 40/10 (lower search volume than Pyörän) anybody have thoughts on this? Seems to appear in 440k pages with searching and ad competition... A lot of the web pages seem to be oriented towards either bikes or bike wheels. Is this an alternate term for Bike? |

Pyörän is the possessive of Pyörä (wheel).
Pyörän can also be in this case with the following example: Pyörän vieressä - next to the wheel Pyörän takana - behind the wheel etc. Drop. .

Finnish is an incredibly complex language - I have been studying it for over 8 years and it still gets me sometimes.
Being an agglutinative language, it uses postpositions tacked on to the end of the subject. It also tacks on possessive to the end of the subject. 17 cases, they can all be combined on to the end of one subject. Mind boggling. In this case "pyörän hinta" (wheel's price), the n is possessive. In this case "pyörän vieressä" (next to the wheel), the n is a postposition. I could give examples of many endings on one word if you're interested... .

Thanks again! I was tempted by the stats in google's goofy relative notation. For example, the google adword competition was 33%, and the search volume was 40%. It looks like more people search for the possessive/post-whatever pyörän (40%) than search for the base noun pyörä (about 10%), although the adword competition is a little bit higher for the base form of the noun, pyörä (40%) than the possessive pyörän (33%).
I went ahead and dropped it, but I was curious about the possessive form pyörän having a stronger average search volume than the nominative form pyörä. It looks like $0.10 will put ads on the first page position 1-3 for either term in google, but when you look at the traffic estimator, it only shows results for pyörä, with around 19-29 clicks a day on google ads. The weird thing is that adwords does not track the trends for pyörän even though it has higher average search volume. Oh well, this would not be the first time that I found google adwords data puzzling... thanks again. |

The possessive form has a long tail.
Here is the fat end of the tail, where "pyörä" (wheel) is basically used as a short term for "polkupyörä" (bicycle) in many of the cases. All of these are possessive. pyörän huolto - bike maintenance pyörän turvaistuin - bike safety seat (child seat) pyörän peräkärry - bike trailer (for kids to ride in, presumably) pyörän renkaat - bike tires pyörän koko - wheel size pyörän osat - bike parts pyörän lukko - bike lock pyörän varaosat - bike spare parts pyörän rengas - bike tire / wheel tire pyörän vuokraus - bike rental pyörän korjaus - bike repair pyörän osia - bike parts pyörän pultit - wheel bolts Google traffic estimator and ad tool give false results because of this long tail. Nobody would ever search for the word "pyörän" by it's self as it is missing it's subect. .
