State of IDN

For Russian domains, What do you realistically think a domain that you think is the BEST domain you can own is worth today?
Also, what is the biggest risks you see for the future of idn's taking all the latest dev. related.

Out of the Russian domains I have, maybe 1 or 2 could get 10,000.
I think this will change once the .рф is in place. Once .рф is operating
the value of Russian IDNs will increase at least 2 fold.

I would say that at the moment, they can easily fetch 5 figures, to the right person...but once they hit the mainstream...look for a significant increase and prices more in line with related ascii .coms
Of course the bigger the market, in a particular language...the more valuable those names will be, IMO.

Phio, are you saying the russian idn .com or russian idn in general will increase value with the introduction of .рф ?

Yes I think it will help the future of IDNs in General. Both China and Russia should get there own idncctld in 2009. No one is certain if and how aliasing will work, but either way it's going to change the internet in favor of IDNs. Many services that do not support IDNs well, such as blogs, and social networking sites will need to keep up and allow for IDNs. Also search engine and online advertising companies will need to make their ads more IDN enabled or they will lose money. It is predicted that by then end of next year 25% of all internet usage will come from China.

agree the benefits idncctld will bring in, but I was more thinking about the competition between .рф and .com.

Good Question. We don't know if there will be aliasing. Aside from that, .com has been known to be trustworthy throughout the world and will continue to be. .fr is favored by the french, but many keywords and key websites are and continue to be .com. There will be a landrush with .рф and many Russian companies will use it. Many users and business' in Russia will want both the .рф and the .com versions of names. Some will be satisfied with one or the other. Just like .fr loses traffic to .com and visa versa, the same will be true with the .рф's vs. .com's.

That said, I can't really predict the future. If I could I would be out buying lotto tickets or on the way to Vegas.

same applies to .中国 - there has been some massive media coverage of the upcoming idncctld in china, many "netizens" have indicated their interests in using the tld. would be very interesting to see how it competes with .com.
