Default Google Chrome, Google’s Browser Project

Quote:
Google Chrome is Google’s open source browser project. As rumored before under the name of “Google Browser”, this will be based on the existing rendering engine Webkit. Furthermore, it will include Google’s Gears project.
The browser will include a JavaScript Virtual Machine called V8, built from scratch by a team in Denmark, and open-sourced as well so other browsers could include it. One aim of V8 was to speed up JavaScript performance in the browser, as it’s such an important component on the web today. Google also say they’re using a “multi-process design” which they say means “a bit more memory up front” but over time also “less memory bloat.” When web pages or plug-ins do use a lot of memory, you can spot them in Chrome’s task manager, “placing blame where blame belongs.”
Google Chrome will use special tabs. Instead of traditional tabs like those seen in Firefox, Chrome puts the tab buttons on the upper side of the window, not below the address bar.

The browser has an address bar with auto-completion features. Called ’omnibox’, Google says it offers search suggestions, top pages you’ve visited, pages you didn’t visit but which are popular amd more. The omnibox (“omni” is a prefix meaning “all”, as in “omniscient” – “all-knowing”) also lets you enter e.g. “digital camera” if the title of the page you visited was “Canon Digital Camera”. Additionally, the omnibox lets you search a website of which it captured the search box; you need to type the site’s name into the address bar, like “amazon”, and then hit the tab key and enter your search keywords.

Can you say "the manipulation of type-in traffic"? An address bar with auto-completion features... You typed güzeller.org but since that is a parked page with a lower search ranking, we think that you really mean guzeller.org which is a developed site...

Screwing with direct navigation may trigger some class-action litigation...

They are already doing it with their drop down on the search bar.

Suggesting to users to select based on the SERPS.....

It does work with IDNs, but not as well (there are a couple of bugs in the current google browser) hit and miss.

But at least accented and International SERPS are there.

oops, search bar......not browser

Alot of people have added the google search bar to their browser, and it now has a drop down that shows (in green) SERP counts with the name, as you continue typing the drop down narrows the field.

In the drop down from the Google Search Bar, IDN results do come up when you begin typing a word with accents or international characters, but I have noticed some bugs in their drop down....

They have this same thing built into a lot of the cctld googles, for a long time already. I believe Hong Kong was the first to get it about 1.5 years ago. Russia has it also, etc.

so there is no more differentiation of address bar and search bar, which converge together and become "omnibox".

bad for type-in traffic IMO.

From a domain value and SEO perspective generally... the world's #1 search engine controlling the browser market can only be bad news for us all.

Unfortunately, we can be assured they most likely will become a serious contender and aside from biased controls build a good browser... sigh - what bad news really... but inevitable as well I guess since this gives them potentially almost 100% control of search revenues for those who end up using their browser... so was a matter of time before they took this step.

Cheers, Asiaplay

PS: I am sure they will eventually get IDNs and languages running like a dream in their browser... but as pointed out - who knows if ones domains will be downgraded to search engine position even for something like a direct type-in.
Google suggest (type a head) is already potentially a threat to limiting the searched range of queries and hence domains which will become remotely useful in markets where they hold a large share...

The more people manipulate direct navigation, the more fundamental importance domains will assume. It is the only means by which browsers as in humans can be sure where they are going. From an advertisers perspective, it will also become of paramount importance.

Anyway, the US administration may let them get away with Murder. In the more important markets, the EU, Chinese and Russians will be on their case.

For domains... it will depend on what they choose to do with redirection in the future... as owners of a search engine and advert earnings, they may choose to over-ride "some" domain names even sometime in the future - obviously most likely only at a point when they have some level of browser dominance.

Too true - they just added their names to follow MS for future investigation for monopolistic activities in China (and I am sure other markets in the future)... I wonder if Baidu shares jumped with this news

Cheers, Asiaplay
