The speed of the site

Time for a new poll. They really are a good tool for me to get your feedback, so please participate.

How is the speed of the site? I know you are all used to being tortured with timeouts and database failures over at idnf, but please don't compare the new site's current speed with that old site. Of course, relative to the old site, anything is better. I want to know how you feel about the speed of this site in general.

Maaaate....no complaints from me mj! I don't kow if it's because I come from a sheltered (IDNF) background, but things are running smooth as silk for me here!

It's becoming a bit sluggish, about 1-2 seconds delay on my end.

Strange as you are closer to the server than anybody else.

Can you do a traceroute and send it via pm? Or what about a firebug trace?

No, I changed some apache params and restarted apache just now.

Apache, php, the image libraries, etc - one of those has a bad memory leak, what's new? I disabled keep-alive for now and set max requests per child lower, so they won't get bloated before restarting.

It will probably take me a week or two to figure out the best configuration for Apache and the current usage load, based on the resources the server has available. Just normal growing pains..

On this side of the pond I have not been experiencing any significant network latency - the pipes going through the Atlantic must be warm this time of year. I know you'll stay on top of the database too, and avoid the terrible slowness we saw in that other place.

These days typical poor response characteristics are just as frequently due to waiting for the browser! We had a brief discussion of this by email; here's a summary. For a typical IDNC visitor, once the first HTTP response is received, probably half of the waiting time for the homepage to be rendered is due to the coding style of VB.

Pretty much ALL productive activity halts when the browser fetches and interprets javascript files. A full third of the wait for the homepage, for example, is due to 2 javascript include files being loaded prematurely. See firebug image.

There are some other similar optimizations that can be made to the front end as well, but making these kinds of changes may negatively impact MJ's ability to maintain the system, so giving feedback to VB team is the preferred strategy.

My main peev is there is no time to EDIT a post for even a few seconds with out the "last edited" thing showing up.

The old place is located in California, whereas our new home is located in Amsterdam. Welcome to Amsterdam :-)

So depending on your geoposition, the network latency could be reduced or increased.
