Default The end of single-rate internet usage?

This new deep packet inspector is an agile monster. It will enable your ISP to begin categorizing and measuring all of the different things you do on the net - web, p2p, voip, email, gaming, etc. This is, of course, an enabler for feeding a charging gateway - charging you different prices for the different things you do, or simply blocking you from doing certain things at all for competitive reasons... Now you can look forward to the day when you will start to receive itemized charges on your internet bill <-- sarcasm.

There have been rumblings of this in the US.

I think they are concerned with the bandwidth hogs, or perhaps just another way to justify taking more $$$.

Video files are slowing the net. Nothing like trying to get some work done but you cant due to gridlock on the net highways because 10,000 people simply MUST watch that video of a cat with a pancake on it's head.

Charter Is Latest ISP To Plan Wiretapping Via DPI

Quote:
Charter Communications has begun sending letters to its customers informing them that, in the name of an "enhanced user experience," it will begin spying on their traffic and inserting targeted ads. This sounds almost indistinguishable from what Phorm proposed doing in the UK. Lauren Weinstein issues a call to arms.
