Default To use "-" or not to use it

Hello,

When you register a 2 word domain in a foregin language, do you prefer registering it with a "-" in the middle (separating keywords) or not. Since we don't know how SE are going to threat IDNs in the future, you don't feel more confortable registering a domain with "-" making it more readable for SE (in case of depeloping pourposes)?

If you can get it without the dash, it's best...unless the word has naturally occuring dashes.

If you are doing fresh regs at this point in time, dashes may be your only alternative as most of the good IDNs were gobbled up years ago, and the remaining have been gobbled up in the last 2 years.

There are a few gems out there....happy hunting!

I would not register the dash, except where it naturally occurs (like French words). For some Arabic, you sometimes have to use the dash, or the words "connect" and cut off part of the letters and usually become unreadable.

Dash ! That was the word I was looking for.. How I can register chinese names if I don't even know english...

Yes, I know there aren't many good names though, I have registered a couple but not many though. Anyway we are trying to invest on this not speculating, just developing, so two word domains may be OK. I don't know yet, since by the moment I'm just studying the possibilities .

So, sorry in advance for the bunch of questions I'll make you in the next days

Ivan

Is it fair to say that with German two word combinations, its best to use the hyphen ??

I have seen so many German names ( both ASCII and IDN ) where the two word with hyphen is registered in loads of extensions, but the two word combo without the hyphen is maybe registered in a single extension.

The same debate rages about Cyrillic IDNs. At least, it used to. I was always alone on the side of correct spelling (and still am, I think). I believe it is OK to reg correctly spelled hyphenated Cyrillic IDNs.

Some words naturally occur with the hyphen, but IDNers usually register the non-hyphenated versions. For example, I found монте-карло (Monte Carlo) unregistered in dot com a few days ago while монтекарло was regged in dot com & net. I happily regged the correctly spelled, hyphenated version.

I see this all the time. I used to reg the correctly spelled hyphenated versions and, when spelled correctly, they get traffic (e.g Веб-Сайт.com (web site dot com)). In cases where I have both the hyphenated and unhyphenated versions, I get traffic to the correctly spelled hyphenated version while the unhyphenated version gets no traffic.

I have some two-word combos with super high Yandex, Rambler, & Overture scores that should NOT be spelled with a hyphen, but I regged them anyway. Those get traffic and clicks, too. However, they are exceptional two-word combos.

Compare that to the few single word .cc IDNs I have. They have super high Yandex, Rambler, & Overture scores. These get essentially no traffic (e.g. порно.cc (porno dot cc)).
