ιταλία.gr
Italy? κύπρος.gr Cyprus? φωτο.gr Photo? Any comments appreciated. Again, I know there's no secondary market or current local usage, but I'd like to know if these are the primary terms. TIA |

ιταλία.gr
Italy? Correct !! κύπρος.gr Cyprus? Correct !! φωτο.gr Photo? Correct but not used as much as either Φωτογραφία ( photograph ) or Φωτογραφίες ( photographs ). I think that φωτο would most likely be used for photography studios or shops - so that is one potential end user. I remember seeing κύπρος.gr available from a few months back and was surprised it was still available. The National Tourism Board of Cyprus do a lot of advertising here in Greece for holidays and travel to Cyprus, and that name would have been perfect for them. Hope thats of some help. Alex

Have you got the confirmation letter that they were approved? Don't be surprised if κύπρος.gr doesn't get the O.K.
Sometime ago ΗΠΑ.gr was available (USA) and I regged it and about a month later it didn't get approved. So, now, it's "policy restricted" - meaning that only the US embassy can reg it I'm pretty sure the same will happen with your Cyprus. If it doesn't you've gotyourself a killer domain! |

Yanni,
Have you got any idea how that "Policy Restriction" works with .gr domains ?? A few months ago, I started searching for various regions in Greece, and literally 99% of them were coming up with the "Policy Restriction" warning - and an explanation that as the names were geographic ones, they couldn't / shouldn't be available. However, it appears as though some Greek geo names slipped through the cracks and were showing up as being available WITHOUT any restrictions. I was able to register Σαντορινη with the .gr extention. I didn't think that the name would actually be approved, but after a few days, I got the confirmation email telling me that the registration was successful. I stuck up a quick "under development" page - and hope to have some content on it fairly soon. There was no way I was going to park that name and risk having it taken back from me. Maybe clipper might also get lucky, and be awarded the domain. Just another example of the way Greeks organise things !! Alex

Well, supposedly geo domains are a no-no. Eventually they let the foreign names go, but local names are still restricted. Don't know how Santorini went through, but I'm sure if the local government wants it they'll take it away from you.
ΗΠΑ I regged maybe a month ago and got the de-reg email a few days back. So I just went and got Αμερικη (America) which is the most commonly used term for the US in Greece. Let's see if I get to keep it. Best thing to do while waiting for approval is NOT to park these names. Also, this is vacation time for Greeks so even though you may wait a bit longer for the final confirmation, the substitute employees might let a few slip through |

So, you've parked κύπρος.gr but not κυπρος.gr (xn--vxakceli.gr). Make sure you include that in your ND account. Also, as I mentioned above, parking these geos is not a good idea. The embassy or a local government can contest them and very well get them taken away from you. |

Thanks, Yanni; unparked.
Do I need to go through the registrar to attain the unaccented version? Thanks.

No, it's yours.
When you reg a name the unaccented version is what gets registered and the accented version gets mapped to the first one. When you park or develop, make sure you redirect or park the other one as well |
