Default IDNs in Greece

Here's some interesting info on how the dot GR registry is handling their IDNs and their peculiarities such as similarity to Latin chars and more.

Excellent reading.

And further proof that ICANN needs to stay out of decision making process for ccTLD matters. Just assign their IDNccTLD to them and stay the fuck out of it.

Very interesting, perhaps an argument against gTLDs for Greek.

This fact was recognized and implemented in our IDN
system. For each domain name with a tonosthe user
gets it’s variant without the tonosfor free. The variant
without tonosis considered the main Domain.
Verisign hasn't mapped the accented/unaccented (tonos/sans-tonos) versions together.

Even though I believe they should, I have to admit that I'm glad I was able to find some great keywords in the unaccented form that the early vacuums didn't pick up.

Are the accents that bad on the Greeks? I think I have some with accents... Damnit!

No, they're not. Actually, that's the correct way to write words.

But, Caps don't take accents. Also, it's much faster and easier to write without them than with, especially for those using English keyboards. And, of course, noob surfers like to use caps a lot for some reason.

Typically, from my findings, the unaccented version gets more traffic than the other.

Now, for future end user sale purposes, the optimum would be to be able to offer both versions. (Or you can hold "hostage" the guy that has the other version and is trying to sell it. That is, if the resale market for Greek domains ever matures...)

I actually prefer them with accents ( though thats cos cos I like things in order ) - though I have plenty though as well without accents ( though this is because the accented version had already been registered. )

I think for type in traffic, the nonaccented versions should do better, though thats not always the case with the Greek IDNs that I have.
