China's domain name global escalation action:
"China" will formally enter the global Internet in 2009. The China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) officially launched "China's domain name global escalation action" on July 16, according to Chinanews.com http://english.people.com.cn/90001/9...1/6453625.html |

Don't you mean 'Ladies and Gentlemen'?
![]() Will CNNIC just hand over the new extension to the current .cn owners or will there be a fee involved? |

"The main contents of this action are from the day domain name ".China" enters the global root domain name system and all those registered users of ".CN" will automatically receive a corresponding ".China" domain name. Users need not register. Also at this time, all ".China" domain names will automatically synchronize with the "Chinese domain name" global registered root domain name system and can be visited anywhere in the world."

So it will be automatic. I thought that's what I read. The ladies and gents over at IDNClub must be celebrating. Anyone know if there is an english interface to buy .cn's at a fair price? Dyd and Domst are a little high.

It's all hot air until the alias is actually inserted into the root. Until then, plans can be changed, cancelled, postponed, etc and so forth.

Another People's Daily article that jumps the gun.
2009 is NOT certain. That's just based on estimates of when ICANN will finally complete the fast-track process and start adding IDN ccTLD's to the root zone. What it DOES appear to confirm is that CNNIC will be aliasing existing .cn names to whatever it is that gets approved by ICANN. Note also that that article automatically translates the expected IDN .ccTLD to it's English equivalent .china. That is going to break stuff in the long run. Automatic translation software should NEVER translate domain names!

It's not incorrect, the ccTLD for .cn is indeed .China - the Chinese language got no abbreviations, words are always spelt out in full. While we think of ccTLD as .cn equivalent in Chinese, the Chinese think of it as .China. Actually .中国 is indeed .China. This is what makes .cn ccTLD inferior. A full word for an extension is just outright weird. How about if start using .unitedkingdom instead of .uk? So we'll have Yahoo.company.unitedkingdom instead of Yahoo.co.uk. lol Last edited by touchring : 21st July 2008 at 05:29:40. |

.中国 will exist in the root (hopefully next year). .china will NOT. So having automatic translation software translate blah.中国 to blah.china will BREAK THINGS.
