No it's not a stand alone word. It's an adjective and requires a noun to go after it.

For non-Russian speakers, are there any rules in the Russian language which we can look out for to determine whether a word is stand alone or not?

Russian is a complex and a very rich language. I don't think any set 'rules' apply and it should be done on a specific case basis.

Generally only GEO names, nouns and pronouns are stand alone. Some adverbs can stand alone too. Unlike English - verbs and adjectives can't stand alone (except some rare exceptions) in Russian language. If, for example, BLUE - an adjective - make a perfect domain name in English - it's not the case for the same word in Russian. Or for example, GO or RUN - verbs - make great domain name in English - but it's not the case in Russian language.

Yes - language is complicated - with many exceptions and few universal rules - so asking native speakers is the best way to check for foreigners I guess.
