I read somewhere that Russian registrars convinced ICANN not to deprecate the .SU extension and ICANN agreed. I guess they simply have a financial interest in having this extension going as there are many (I think about 15,000) names registered in .SU

Hmmm.

I've of the opinion too, that once created, TLD's shold stay that way, unless every host within goes away naturally.

That said, I would place a lock on defunct ccTLD's so that current owners can update DNS but no new domains can be added.

As for me, IDN.su is just a pilot project. There will be IDN for an extention of Russia.
It is just a matter of time.
